This is my foray into spreading the gospel of Scotch and wine to my fellow imbibers!
I have long had an affinity for thorough scientific investigation, perhaps it’s the engineer in me, and I have been taking the same approach as I travel through the wonderful world of wines and spirits. For those who share my affliction for barley and vine, let the drinking begin!
There are numerous wine blogs and websites that provide a huge amount of information on wine and the same is true for Single Malt scotch. Since I’m an impatient fellow, I always want to get to the conclusion which is “Hell yeah I’d buy that again ” or “Hobos wouldn’t drink this swill “. It is not my intention to bore you with endless fancy wine tasting terminology but, if you are really interested, you can always Google the “Wine tasting flavor wheel”!
I have been drinking wine every day for ages, in the name of research of course, and as I kept telling myself that it eventually became true. I think I have actually drunk enough now that I can start sharing my findings! It’s a tough job but I’m willing to make the sacrifice to help my friends navigate the mine field of all things Barley and Vine.
I think we all gravitate to what we are familiar with, at least in the beginning. A prime example is The Glenlivit which is the best-selling single malt Scotch in America. It’s certainly a good wee dram, but there is a fantastic array of lesser known single malt Scotch out there and some very tasty ones from small distilleries across Scotland.
I often encounter people whose taste in wine is based simply on where it’s from. Patriotism aside, this notion severely limits your enjoyment in the world of wine. As my mother always said when I was a boy “How do you know what you like until you try it!”
It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and embark on a magical mystery tour of the grapes and barley that make it a wonderful world!
